Falcom Veteran Developers Want Trails Remakes to Continue Through Crossbell

Falcom president Toshihiro Kondo has discussed the company’s upcoming development slate in a new Weekly Famitsu interview, including the continuation of Trails beyond the Horizon, a potential Trails in the Sky the 3rd remake, the next Ys, and the previously announced Dragon Slayer project.

Regarding the next Trails project, Kondo said Falcom is working on the concluding chapter of Trails beyond the Horizon. The company intends for the next entry to finish the current storyline, although Kondo acknowledged that Falcom has made similar statements about concluding arcs before.

Falcom’s order for upcoming Trails projects remains undecided. Kondo reiterated that the company wants to tackle Trails in the Sky the 3rd in some form, but its available development resources make producing that project and the next Trails beyond the Horizon title simultaneously difficult.

Kondo also expressed interest in eventually remaking Trails from Zero and Trails to Azure. He explained that some staff members who worked on the original Trails in the Sky games are approaching retirement age in the coming years and have expressed a desire to see the remakes continue through the end of the Crossbell arc. However, no Zero or Azure remake has been announced.

Kondo then confirmed that development on a new Ys game has already begun internally. Ys celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2027, but Kondo indicated the new game is unlikely to be ready for release that year. Falcom still hopes to share information about the project around that period.

The company’s development pipeline also includes two projects that have not yet been officially announced. Kondo did not identify either game or provide release windows.

Falcom is additionally preparing another update on its Dragon Slayer project. The company is considering when and where to share its next update, although Kondo noted that development involves outside partners and requires coordination with them.
