Flowstone Saga Brings Its Puzzle-Based JRPG Adventure to Nintendo Switch

Flowstone Saga, a retro-inspired RPG featuring pixel art and a presentation influenced by classic 16-bit JRPGs, is now available on Nintendo Switch. Developed by Impact Gameworks, the game brings its falling-block puzzle combat to Nintendo’s console following a well-received PC debut in September 2024. It currently holds a “Very Positive” user review rating on Steam.

If this is your first time hearing about Flowstone Saga, it combines a 16-bit-inspired presentation with a combat system built around falling-block puzzles. Players follow Mirai, a young adventurer who discovers an ancient power alongside her pet, Sprig, setting her on a journey through the islands of Ocean’s End.

The battles are where things get interesting. Clearing lines lets Mirai attack enemies, while magic, items, and combos provide more ways to take control of the board. Monsters aren’t just waiting around for you to finish, either. They can disrupt your plans with unusual pieces, attacks that destroy tiles, and status effects that complicate your next move.

For players who prefer having time to think, there’s also an optional turn-based approach to combat. That gives the puzzle battles some flexibility, whether you enjoy reacting under pressure or carefully planning where each piece should go.

Outside of combat, Flowstone Saga features equipment customization and its own take on a job system, appropriately called the “Frog” system. There’s also fishing and a town-building component that lets you help expand New Riverstone and decorate your surroundings, with the developer describing the latter as an Animal Crossing-style feature.

Backing the adventure is a soundtrack featuring more than 70 songs, alongside pixel art and a character-driven story. If you’ve been looking for an RPG that does something different with its battles, the mix of falling-block puzzles and character progression could put this one on your radar. Honestly, I’m interested in this combat system, I’m going to have to give this a try for myself. That’s definitely something different.

Flowstone Saga is available now through the Nintendo eShop in North America, South America, Europe, and Australia. The PC version remains available on Steam.
