SNES and Sega Genesis Get 2 New Official Physical Releases in 2027

More than 30 years after the launch of the SNES and Sega Genesis, both retro game consoles are getting a brand-new physical release in 2027. In 2027, Mr. Nutz will return to the same consoles that once hosted classics like Super Mario World, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, and Sonic the Hedgehog, giving longtime fans a reason to finally dust off their original hardware.

Both consoles defined the 16-bit era, and the fact that they're getting new releases in the modern age is a testament to the tremendous staying power of both systems. This will be the first time that Mr. Nutz is coming to the Sega Genesis, and the first time its sequel, Mr. Nutz: Hoppin Mad, will be available for both consoles.

A New SNES and Sega Genesis Game Officially Releases in 2027

Developed by Philippe Dessoly and Pierre Adane and published by Ocean Software, Mr. Nutz is a 2D side-scrolling mascot platformer originally released on the Super Nintendo in 1993. Between 1994 and 2001, it was also ported to the Mega Drive, the Game Boy Color and, in Europe exclusively, the Game Boy and Game Boy Advance. However, it never made its way to the Sega Genesis in either North America or Europe, only being available in the former region via the Sega Channel.

Now, 33 years later, Mr. Nutz is finally getting an official physical release for the Sega Genesis. Not only that, but its "long-lost" sequel, Mr. Nutz: Hoppin Mad, is also being released on the SNES and Genesis for the first time ever alongside it.

Mr. Nutz: Hoppin Mad is a quirky, bright, and colorful 2D platformer just like the original, but it was only released for a single platform. Specifically, it was exclusively released for the Amiga personal computer, making it virtually inaccessible to play today for the vast majority of gamers.

Mr. Nuts: Hopping Mad was actually originally intended to be ported to the Sega Genesis and Mega Drive in 1995, a year after its initial release, but this never ended up happening. It's a tragedy, as Mr. Nutz would have fit in perfectly alongside the other mascot platformer stars who helped define the era, like Sonic, Ristar, and Sparkster.

Courtesy of Atari and Strictly Limited, both Mr. Nutz and Mr. Nutz: Hopping Mad are receiving "premium physical releases" in both PAL and NTSC regions. Each game in the duology is sold separately, with each selling for $49.99 USD. Pre-orders are currently open for both games in both regions, and the games are both scheduled to release sometime in 2027.

For Sega Genesis fans, this is a chance to finally take advantage of an opportunity that should have been available decades ago. SNES fans, meanwhile, have the rare chance to play a game they were never even supposed to.
