Killzone Remake Reportedly Underway at People Can Fly as Horizon Plans Shift

A Killzone remake is in the early stages of production, according to MP1st, with Guerrilla Games collaborating with an external studio rather than handling development in-house.

Both DualShockers and OpenCritic have reported on the story, with People Can Fly, the Polish studio behind Bulletstorm and Outriders, strongly indicated as the developer.

The connection to People Can Fly isn't a leap. The studio has already confirmed a deal with PlayStation to develop a PS5 game based on an existing Sony IP, codenamed Project Delta. MP1st believes that project is the Killzone remake in question.

People Can Fly announced Project Delta in 2024, describing it only as a prototype for a new game built around a publisher-owned intellectual property. No title was named at the time.

MP1st's sources now tie that codenamed project directly to the Killzone franchise, with the most likely candidate being a remake of the original 2004 PS2 entry.

Which specific Killzone game gets the remake treatment remains unconfirmed.

Horizon Struggles Reshuffling Guerrilla's Schedule

The original plan, per MP1st's sources, was for Killzone to become Guerrilla's primary focus once the studio wrapped work on Horizon Hunters Gathering. That schedule appears to have changed.

Horizon Hunters Gathering is being retooled away from its live-service format into a more traditional multiplayer experience, and separately, only a small team is currently assigned to the next mainline single-player Horizon title, which is reportedly years from release.

Because of those setbacks, the Killzone project is now expected to arrive before Horizon 3. That's notable given how early in development the remake reportedly sits.

What This Means for Killzone Fans

The franchise has been dormant since Killzone Shadow Fall launched alongside the PS4 in 2013. Sony had previously positioned Killzone as a flagship shooter, the so-called "Halo killer", though the series never quite matched those ambitions commercially or critically.

A remake handled by a third-party studio rather than Guerrilla directly is an unconventional approach. People Can Fly has experience with shooter mechanics across Bulletstorm and Outriders, making them a plausible fit for the IP.

No release window, platforms beyond PS5, or pricing have been announced. Given the project is described as being in very early stages, a reveal is unlikely in the near term.
